Dex, 3, braves the cold for a trip to Lake Park on January 1 while visiting his grandfather Duane. Dex says his favorite thing to do is ride the merry-go-round because then he feels "just like spiderman." (photo by Katie Derus/Winona Daily News)
This is one of my favorite I have ever taken ... which is why I love getting sent out on wild art assignments. They always let me get creative :) Also, this one ran in the paper with the headline "The Wind Beneath His Wings" and I actually laughed out loud when I picked up the paper. The ear flaps flying definately makes this photo!

Car Fire!
Winona firefighters use a Sawzall to gain entry into the trunk of a vehicle they just extinguished on February 20 in the 900 block of E. Mark Street. Eric Drazkowski had been inside calling a tow truck for his car, which he had been attempting to get started, when he realized it was on fire. According to Fire Captain Dave Ritter, the fire apparently started in the back of the car in the fuel tank and quickly spread up the side of the garage. (photo by Katie Derus/Winona Daily News)
As a regular human this stuff is hard to cover... but as a journalist this was AWESOME.

I Like Turtles....
Baby blandings turtle in Wabasha, Minn.
A female Blanding's Turtle crosses Wabasha County Road 84 in Kellogg on June 7, 2007 after laying her eggs in the Weaver sand dunes. Every spring, usually in the first two weeks of June, nearly 1,000 of these gravid (pregnant) turtles make the mile long journey from their home in the swamps to the dunes crossing the highway that separates them. The area is believed to be home to 15 - 20,000 Blanding's turtles along with seven other species of turtles. (photo by Katie Derus/Winona Daily News)
Midwest Winter... yay?
Pretty standard scene here ... since it blizzards like once a week. Sometimes twice when mother nature feels like making us work. (photo by Katie Derus/Winona Daily News)
